Health Insurance

The United States healthcare system

In the USA, financing for health-related services is low, the vast majority of which are provided by private companies. Many individuals have difficulty affording healthcare costs - after all, a day in a hospital can cost a fortune. It is very important that people who live, study or travel in the United States purchase adequate health insurance that covers a range of medical procedures, from a CT scan or MRI to a vaccine or operation. In short: complete insurance.

Having insurance will help you pay for any treatment you may need while studying in the USA. It is normal that you will need to pay a monthly fee that will depend on the level of your insurance and how many people are included in it.

Health insurance

International students do not need to purchase health insurance to obtain an F-1 student visa, but most American universities and colleges ask their students to purchase some type of insurance. You will need to check this information directly with your institution before enrolling - in fact, some have insurance among the documents required for registration.

Each institution in different US states requires different "levels" of health insurance. That's why it's essential that you talk to your university to find out the specifics of your insurance. In most cases, you will find this information on the institution's official website.

For those who already have any medical condition or need before traveling, it is extremely important to know whether this will have any impact on your insurance. Some companies may charge more expensive monthly fees for health problems that already existed before the plan was purchased; some may impose a wait of up to 12 months before the insurance takes effect.

Home and property insurance

Health insurance may be essential for all international students in the US, but it is also advisable to have home and property insurance. What will you do if someone steals your cell phone? Or your computer? Could you buy a new one? How could this interfere with your studies?

If you are living on your university campus in an academic residential building, your belongings may be at risk. Some universities recognize this fact and already include property insurance in the cost of accommodation. Before signing your lease, you should check whether the price you pay includes insurance and what it covers. Students with high-value electronic devices should consider extra insurance.

If your university does not offer any home or property insurance options, they will probably be able to tell you where to purchase one, which companies are trustworthy, and which ones offer special offers for students. If you are going to live with other people, it is best that everyone has their own insurance separately.

Always keep your documents updated and stored safely. If an accident happens or something is stolen from you, evaluate it carefully before claiming insurance. If the damage is not urgent, it may not be worth the monthly payments for your plan.
